We are the Book Fair Foundation, a registered charity based in Dayton, Ohio and we have made a small empire out of second-hand books. We love used books and we love giving people a meaningful place where they can donate books that they (or often, sadly, their parents) are finished with.
The funds generated by selling books at our annual sale (the third largest in the country), via online platforms and through our brick and mortar bookstore, Rabbit Hole Books, we have endowed over two million dollars in grants to other non-profits in a variety of areas: social welfare, arts, environment, education.
But it has long bothered us that no writer gets any recognition for this. Royalties, of course, are only paid on the first sale of a book– and really there’s no way to change that. But we believe that we can, at the very least make a meaningful gesture of appreciation.
Thus, the Curious Medal for Literary Endeavor was conceived.
